Campaign Media Alert

WHO: Bloggers United for Cuban Liberty (BUCL)

WHAT: A candlelight vigil for Cuba’s past and present political prisoners with an appeal to Sting, singer of The Police, to advocate for human rights on the band’s reported concert in Havana.

WHEN: Monday July 9, 2007 at 8:30 p.m.

WHERE: In front of Versailles Restaurant in Miami, 35th Avenue and SW 8th Street.

WHY: Sting was an outspoken advocate for Amnesty International during the 1980s, denouncing abuses of human rights in Chile and South Africa. Amnesty International currently recognizes more than 70 prisoners of conscience in Cuba and, to date, both Sting and The Police have remained silent on the matter. In April it was reported that the band accepted an invitation from the Castro regime to play a free concert in Havana.

Bloggers United for Cuban Liberty is taking the opportunity to appeal to Sting to maintain his principled stand on human rights by denouncing human rights abuses in Castro’s Cuba while The Police are in South Florida for their July 10th show at Dolphin Stadium.
